Editing

We went outside to film the last bit of our commercial. We filmed Macy walking towards the camera and catching the Gatorade bottle from off screen saying “After my game I love to take a nice refreshing sip of Gatorade”. We also needed a sound of the Gatorade cap cracking open. So we went into the shed at the field and recorded sound of the Gatorade bottle opening. At the beginning of the class we were informed that pinnacle Studios was not functioning properly, we tried dumping our footage. Our teacher kept saying to try again. We did as instructed and still couldn’t get it to work, we called for help and the teacher couldn’t dump the footage either. With dumping, we had to extract our footage from Adrianas phone to the computer and import it into pinnacle studios. What we are going to do for the editing process is add color correction, Crowd sound effects, audio of a soccer ball being kicked and other effects. The title of this blog can be misleading, there was no editing actually completed in class. The editing software we are supposed to use, pinnacle studios, was not working. This made it very difficult for us, because we didn’t know what should be re-videoed since we didn’t get to lay out our footage. However, it did make it so we had an extra day to finish our ending-clips for the commercial project. At the end of our commercial, I have to say a statement and then catch a bottle of Gatorade. This is the part that we filmed today. Everything worked out better today than last class. The weather was clear and there were very few people outside since most had already finished filming. This made it easier to get the right shot and we had to take much fewer takes than last class. We believe we got the right clip for the video. I like the way it looks and you can clearly hear Macy’s voice even though it was kind of windy outside. This might change whether we voiceover the whole commercial or not. For the actual taping of the video, Macy put on on her soccer uniform on top of her school clothes to save some time. We then only did the scenes we knew we needed more filming for. This allowed us to still have time to finish this blog when we got back to class. For these clips As soon as after Macy says the word Gatorade, I tossed a Gatorade bottle to her. This adds a cooler feeling through Macy saying “Gatorade”. For most of the videos, we had to retake them because my tossing of the bottle was not perfected for a good amount of time. When tossing the bottle, I had to do it from the right angle so my arm wouldn’t get in the shot. They also had to make sure that the bottle was up-right and down so that Macy could easily catch it. This process took a while to perfect but we eventually got it. The clip we took today I believe was *the one*. Macy caught the bottle without looking to the side and said her line with a good pronunciation. Next class we will hopefully begin the editing process.

Filming

For our filming we used Adriana’s iPhone 11 pro. It had a higher quality camera than the ones at our disposal and had auto stabilization. For outfits we had Macy (who played our main character) dress in her school soccer uniform. I played the goalie, so I wore red and black athletic shorts and a red long sleeve shirt. We went out onto football/soccer field and filmed there. We started filming with Macy doing a trick with the ball and then dribbling the ball towards the goal and kicking it into the goal. We than filmed the same process at least three or four times for safety takes. After we filmed that we moved on to filming the event from a different angle. This time the shot would have me in it as the goalie. When Macy would kick the ball towards the goal, I would dive for it but ultimately miss so she would score. We followed the same process a couple more times and tried to find which take was the best. We decided which take we wanted to use and moved on to the next shot. The next shot have the camera close to my back but to where you would see Macy kicking the ball into the goal. A funny event that happened while filming this was when Macy kicked the ball towards the goal and ended up with the ball hitting me in the face. As much as it hurt, I can’t deny that it was pretty hilarious. We did a couple more takes, and thankfully I didn’t get hit again, and found which take was the best. After that we filmed a shot of the ball going towards the camera as Macy kicked it towards the goal. This was one of the harder shots to get. Mainly because we couldn’t get the ball to go exactly where we wanted wanted to. We took a lot of takes to see if we could get the shot we wanted. Another on- set goof that took place was when we were filming this, Macy kicked the ball and hit Adriana’s phone out of her hands and we got it on camera. The next scene we filmed was Macy walking towards the camera and a hand from off screen gives her the Gatorade. Macy the recites the line: “after a long game, I need to replenish my energy, and nothing gets the job done better than Gatorade.” She then takes a long sip of the Gatorade and then looks at the camera. After what felt like a long process of filming, my group and I are happy with the final product we have. Each group member put a lot of effort in there role and we hope the editing process goes smoothly. We plan to add multiple effects and such during the editing phase. We are going to add a crowd sound effect, some audio of heavy breathing, better color correction, and sound effects of the ball being kicked. After a lot of planning, our vision is finally being realized and we have a better idea of what the final product will look like. I’m excited to get this video edited and fully realized for presentations.

Storyboard

Today in class we edited and finished our story board. We filled six panels (scenes) with the events that will be going on during the commercial. Each box/scene on the storyboard is worth 5 seconds, since the commercial is 30s and there are 6 boxes. In the first scene a girl is running while dribbling  a soccer ball. The camera angle for this scene is a tracking shot, followed by the sound of a crowd cheering in the background. The second panel consists of a zoom that leads to a medium close-up shot. This will be angle facing the girl as she takes a deep breath. For the third panel it will be a wide shot with a high angle of the girl shooting her shot. For the fourth box it will cutaway to a wide shot from behind the net of a girl scoring a goal, and then at the end the same girl bending down to put her hands on her knees. With this motion, it transitions to the girl lifting the Gatorade bottle out of the Gatorade cooler, which is scene five (also called an action match). Then for the final scene it will be the girl opening the Gatorade bottle with the satisfying click and then taking a fat sip of it. All of these noises will be enhanced to fit/match the storyboard.

The finished product with be all of these scenes combined. This storyboard is going to help us organize our commercial. It will also show us the necessary materials we will need to make the commercial the best it can be. The storyboard will most likely end up being refined to make our commercial even more smooth and have the best angles and transitions, but for now this is how it looks.

Editing lesson blog

Today we learned about the editing process phase of our project. We learned about the camera that we will be using and how to record with it. We learned about the use of the tripod and how it will help keep our camera stable. We learned about the DCIM. This is the folder that contains all our footage. It contains the SD card information. He also has the date and time that the footage was recorded. Next there is important this is when you take the SD card information from the desktop and place it into the editing software/program. When you open the editing software click edit at the top of the screen to import the footage. This is where the actual editing process begins.
To import you must press Desktop-plus sign- media- the checked footage will transfer- import will start on bottom. There are three different places to put your footage AV track 1, 2, and 3. Av track 1 is for the title. Track 2 is for the footage to be edited. Track 3 is for music. The play bar is the red line that is vertical to the footage. If you want to cut a clip in a certain spot this is where you would place the play bar. You can right click on a section of film to add effects. To take the audio out of a clip, you right click and press “detach audio”. When importing footage there will be a yellow line wait for the line to disappear in small chunks so that it can render and fully import into this software.
To save your progress, you want to export it. You must export the footage from the program to the desktop. The footage will need to render to save. You can replay what you’ve saved to see how it looks. If you don’t like it then you can import it again and use your knowledge to fix it.

Planning

Today my group and I organized our commercial project. This helped us make a schedule to create a project that is well time-managed. It also made it so we had a better understanding on what our commercial was going to look like. For the plan we included: props, costumes, schedules, locations, and a backup plan for if something went wrong. Planning the commercial will help keep us on track and have less of a struggle putting the project together once we have all the components. It also makes sure we have all the components ready for our filming day. Without the plan, we could forget a prop, not manage time well, do the wrong thing on the wrong day, etc. The plan will insure we get everything done correctly and on time. This plan also will contribute greatly to our storyboard we have to eventually make when we are beginning our pre-filming process.
1) Props
-Soccer ball, cleats, Gatorade cooler, a bottle of Gatorade, a camera
2) Costumes
-Soccer jersey, soccer shorts, soccer socks, cleats, hair tie, pre wrap
3) Schedule
10/10 > Planning Period
10/14 > Storyboarding
10/22 > Filming
10/24 > Editing
4) Location
-Soccer field at FLHS
5) Back-up Plan
-In the event that it rains outside, we will still be doing the exact same thing because the rain would actually add to our dramatic effect + it would help with the “sweat” that is going to be on my face in the commercial when I’m running down the field with a soccer ball, so it wouldn’t change anything it actually might help
-If one of our star members or cameraman are absent the day of filming, we will replace them with the next best runner up and/or eliminate the use of them in the film, unless we are allowed to use another student from our class not in our group to take their spot

Research conventions and codes

As our commercial Macy Doyle, Ben Coleman, Andrew Stern and I have chosen to sell Gatorade. We chose gatorade because we feel it would be a very fun and somewhat east commercial to portray. From our research we’ve seen that many gatorade commercials are typically around 30 seconds long, just like any other commercial but being that they are a sports centered company most of the commercials they produced are centered around athletes. For example a track star or a soccer player on the field and then at the end pop up a picture of their logo. Or even something as simple as a celebrity endorsing the products making it likeable by consumers. There are also typically voiceovers in gatorade and most sports commercials in general. Many of these features although not completely original are factors we want to include in our gatorade commercials as they are very key features of sports commercials.

For our commercial we plan on creating something similar or resembling of a gatorade commercial but still keeping it original and selling the product. Just as a typical gatorade commercial we want to include a sports scene of some sort. Either a soccer team practicing for a game a basketball game or a track star. In the surrounding area we have a small team cheering on with the large gatorade jug typically full of water or electrolyte drink. This would be just to put the name out there not for actual use. This jug would also be accompanied by the small gatorade paper cups. Next to that would be pictured a large cooler full of ice and a variety of bottles of gatorade. A team of players or a runner would run up after a big win or exhausting training session, deeply reach into the cooler and pull out a perfectly nice and cold bottle of gatorade. The person would take a nice sip, feel refreshed, and continue on with the training from their satisfying gatorade. The commercial would include voiceovers upbeat audio and effective camera angles all used to portray the message. We also have other idea yet this is our main one yet is still subject to change.

We feel as thought this commercial would be very effective in explaining to the reader very explicitly what our intention as are and why we are trying to sell. We don’t want to make an intensely emotional connection with the reader but still want to entice them and make them emphasize with us feeling as thought they’ve been in that same prostitution before. The idea is to relate with the audience while also making them want to buy the products. We want to portray this through the use of the acting in the comercial the exhaustion and the feeling is not wanting to be there but pushing through and getting it done with the help of gatorade. As well as making the gatorade look appealing itself with the dripping water and the mouth going on the bottle hearing it flowing down the theorist of the athlete and the sound of refreshment. Almost that of what you hear in a soda commercial. The use of sound camera angles and acting will be very important in this comercial just like any other and aspiring to sell the product while creating a very convincing and appealing commercial.

Introductory

This is my first blog for my AICE Media Studies projects. My name is Ben and this blog will be about the process of my projects throughout the course. I will walk you through the production of my projects and how I will make my progress when producing them. I was born in Hollywood and now live in Plantation. I’m 16 years old and I have a strong passion film and I hope to have a successful career as a director/actor. I grew up doing things like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA, and other activities.
I have lived in three different homes in my life because living expenses were too high after budget cuts cost my father his job. We moved into a rental home where we searched for an affordable permanent home for almost six years.

The schools I went to were Hollywood central elementary school. I really loved going there and had a good amount of friends that I still talk to. I also went to Beachside Montessori Village because my brother and I switched schools. Being at Beachside was fun because most of my other friends moved to the same school. I was at beachside from 2nd grade to eighth grade and then graduated to high school. I didn’t always enjoy school as I have struggled with some subjects. But now I’m at Fort Lauderdale high school. I plan on attending savannah college of art and design to pursue a career in film.

I have a dog that I have had for 14 years. His name is Clyde he is a black lab. He may not be the smartest dog but he’s definitely the sweetest. I also have a cat that I have for a shorter amount of time but he’s around the same age. These two animals have been with me for most of my life. I hope that my blog is helpful. I also hope that my work is well done and well executed.
